Tuesday night I watched a t.v. show on WTTW called Musical Minds. It was about how the power of music can make the brain come alive. The episode featured case studies conducted by neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks, author of the book Musicophilia. Extraordinary individuals from across the globe were introduced, like Tony Cicoria, and Matt Giordano. These men are musical savants that suffer from severe neurological disorders.
Tony Cicoria was struck by lightning and in turn,he was inspired to learn how to play the piano. Matt Giordano suffers from severe Tourettes and only finds relief from playing the drums. Giordano is 26 years old and one of the most gifted drummers I’ve ever seen. A gentleman from London has been blind and autistic since birth and has become one of the world’s greatest piano players. With no formal training, he is able to hear a new piece of music only once and can play it back note for note.
It is astounding how the human brain may be void of very normal function and has the capatcity to fill the vacant space with musical talent. For instance, the man from London can’t tell you where he lives and struggles to count to ten, but his hands fly across the piano keys at lightning speed without a single wrong note. … continue reading this entry.



Lately it seems as though I’ve spent too much time worry… worry about having the right job, making enough money, spending enough time with friends, etc. I’ve had numerous conversations with my dad about how this economy has changed people’s daily mentalities. People seem to spend most of their day stressed and forget about the small good things in life.
